Ultrasound units have become more portable, giving clinicians (including those who are relatively untrained) the ability to provide an exam right at the bedside. But does making this technology available increase inappropriate utilization?

It’s a question posed by DI blogger Tim Myers, MD. He suggested the need to develop a training program for ultrasound examinations, policies around reimbursement of the exams, and quality assurance rules to protect patients.
