Nuance Demos Quality Guidance, Multimedia Reporting

Among the features that Nuance will showcase at RSNA 2015 are updates to PowerScribe360 aimed at “achieving quality by achieving consistency.”

PowerScribe360, Nuance’s flagship reporting system, has received updates to its new Quality Guidance feature, a system that aids radiologists in a “very complex” process, Leonard Berland, chair of the Body Imaging Commission, ACR, told Diagnostic Imaging.

Berland explained the need for there to be a computerized process to alert the radiologist of recommendations based on what the exam they are reading.

“It’s very hard to figure out how to apply [recommendations]; people read papers, post things on their wall, look at flow charts and tables,” Berland said.

Quality Guidance provides a guidance module that can be accessed at the point of interpretation. Clicking on the module invokes a window pane that appears on the same screen as the radiologist’s dictation, and allows you to input relevant factors related to the identified structure, for example, size and density.

As data is input, text appears on the right side of the pane that shows the radiologist what it’s going to say in the findings section, impressions section, and will include an optional citation, Berland explained. The system constructs the relevant content for the needed guideline and gets dropped directly into the report upon approval.

“[The system] will give you all of the categorizations and diagnoses to put directly with consistent terminology into the report, so you can achieve quality by achieving consistency,” Berland said. “Many people in practice read scans they aren’t necessarily expert on and research has shown that your compliance with guidelines is maybe half of what it would be if you were an expert, so you could be giving wrong advice about a patient.”

As new guidelines are developed, they will be updated in Nuance’s PowerShare network.

Nuance will also be featuring its automated lung cancer screening reporting and registry submission. The PowerShare Registry Reporting Service eases the creation and ongoing management of lung cancer screening programs, according to a release. PowerScribe 360 version 3.5’s multimedia reporting will also be on display, which enables relevant PACS images to be embedded into reports between physicians.
