SAN DIEGO, Calif., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- From the exhibition floor of the Healthcare Information Management Specialist Society (HIMSS) 2003 Annual Conference and Exhibition, a panel of independent healthcare industry experts honored Don Caruso, M.D., Department Chair of Family Practice at Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene in Keene, New Hampshire, as this year's recipient of Microsoft's Physician of the Year Award. The award was based on Caruso's innovative use of the TouchWorks(TM) suite of electronic medical record (EMR) and information applications from Allscripts Healthcare Solutions , integrated with the practice's enterprise information system to measurably improve the quality and cost of patient care. Caruso was one of three finalists out of a field of 19 physician entries for the award.
"First and foremost, TouchWorks provided our physicians the ability to easily and rapidly find and communicate information -- this really improves the way we care for patients," said Caruso. "At the same time, by driving process improvement, TouchWorks has also provided our practice with a real return on our investment."
DHMC-Keene has realized significant savings due to operational efficiencies enabled by TouchWorks. The practice has already reduced the need to pull charts by approximately 50% and is rapidly progressing towards a completely paperless patient record.
"Dr. Caruso has demonstrated strong leadership in driving adoption of information technology with physicians at DHMC-Keene," stated Dr. Ahmad Hashem, M.D., PhD, Global Healthcare Productivity Manager at Microsoft. "He has deployed TouchWorks with an approach that was not only agreeable to physicians, but made them excited about leveraging information technology in how they practice medicine."
"For the second year in a row, we're proud to have another TouchWorks physician user recognized as a leader in their use of clinical software solutions to improve patient care," commented Peter Geerlofs, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of Allscripts Healthcare Solutions. "We applaud his exemplary use of leading-edge technology to deliver better patient care more efficiently and cost effectively." A number of the other finalists for this award also utilize the TouchWorks applications in their practices.
