ATLANTA, Nov. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Cooper Pediatrics, a solo-practitioner office using EncounterPRO, an electronic medical record (EMR) from JMJ Technologies, is winner of the 2003 Davies Award for Excellence in ambulatory care. The Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) bestowed the high honor on Dr. Jeffrey D. Cooper for his 1995 implementation of an EMR into his high-volume Atlanta-area practice.
The main criterion of the HIMSS award is improvement in the delivery of patient care. Dr. Cooper's Duluth office eliminated all chart-pulling, increased the immunization rate to 99 percent and decreased call turnaround time to less than 20 minutes. Drug refill time decreased to 20 minutes, primarily due to the elimination of pulling paper charts. Charting time decreased from four minutes to one minute, giving Dr. Cooper more time with patients. Office wait time decreased from 60 to 35 minutes from check-in to check-out. His EMR electronically prints prescriptions. Except for scanning and storing documents, his office is paperless.
Dr. Cooper currently works with a part-time Physician's Assistant and two part-time Nurse Practitioners. In 1995 his total number of patients numbered 3500 and his practice was closed to new patients. His office currently serves 12,000 active patients from all over North Georgia. In 2002, Dr. Cooper and his staff handled over 18,000 patient encounters. Over the past eight years, his total volume of patients increased by 255 percent.
"My solo practice provides proof that the migration to an electronic information system improves safety, the quality of healthcare delivery, patient and physician satisfaction, and billings," Dr. Cooper wrote in his award-winning application to HIMSS. "The bottom line is crystal clear. In terms of operating a small business, how can a physician afford not to automate his practice?"
